It's Worth the Loss

8 If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or crippled than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into eternal fire. 9 And if your eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell.

Matthew 18:8-9

I grew up reading Fantasy novels. I loved them. Hours upon hours. I read the Game of Thrones series before I was a Christian. So when I heard they were making a series, I was both excited but also… worried. You see, I’d become a Christian and I was pretty sure what would be in those episodes.

Like many young men. Like most non-Christian men. I grew up watching pornography. It had been a long struggle to stop watching porn. But then I fell into a different form of sin. I didn’t watch porn anymore, but I didn’t blink an eye, even looked forward to watching shows or movies that may not have been classified as porn, but definitely showed a lot of skin.

It was around the time Game of Thrones came out that I’d started to really feel God’s Spirit at work in my conscience. Had I really won the battle with lust? Or was I congratulating myself a bit too early.

It felt like every person at my work, every friend at soccer was telling me how good Game of Thrones was. Eventually, I chose not to watch it. It feels like a loss. But is it really?

I knew a person, a good friend back in the day, who went a different direction. He was a Christian, who kept watching pornography, it was for him a slide that ended with an affair. I can’t speak for his faith but I think the point stands… is sin worth it.

That’s Jesus point. That’s his loving point. He isn’t here to kill your joy. He’s here to bring you true joy. Sin is never worth it. No matter how much you want whatever it is, it’s never worth it. So don’t give an inch. Don’t budge. Fight with all you’ve got.

Today:

  • Have you made real progress in regards to one area of sin?

  • What’s one sin that’s been on your conscience recently?

  • What might it look like to cut it out?

Pray:

  • Praise the Father that he is holy and sinless.

  • Give thanks for Jesus who resisted all temptation for our sake.

  • Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others cut off sins that may cause you to stumble.
